Olney is
a thriving market town with a growing population of circa 7000. It is situated approximately 11 miles equidistant from Central Milton Keynes,
Northampton, Bedford and Wellingborough. The town has excellent facilities
and amenities; these include general stores, chemist, banks, building societies,
doctors, dentist, opticians, public houses and restaurants. The town also boasts lower, middle and secondary schools. Sports facilities include rugby,
cricket, football, bowls, tennis and health clubs.
Olney is steeped in history with its own
museum and is the home of the original Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race. Famous past residents include John Newton (the reformed slave trader who wrote many hymns including "Amazing Grace") and the poet William Cowper. Since the demise of the cattle market, the town continues with a weekly General Market and a monthy Sunday Farmers Market. Annual attractions include a raft race, a firework display and the renowned "Dickens of a Christmas" event. |
